Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Dropping Business Server Package

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced on one of their blogs that they'll be dropping the development of Windows Essential Business Server (EBS) starting on June 30.

According to the blog entry, the purpose of discontinuing the server package was in order to "streamline [the] server product portfolio" of Microsoft.

"Midsize businesses are rapidly turning to technologies such as ... virtualization and cloud computing as a means to cut costs, improve efficiency, and increase competitiveness. Those capabilities are already available through other offerings, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft System Center and the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite."

The company added they understand that by doing this their EBS customers will incur more costs and make things more difficult for them, so they're offering the individual component software from the EBS 2008 suite for free for their existing customers. That policy will be in place through December 31, 2010, and will be implemented on June 30, 2010.

Microsoft added they'll also provide technical support for the next five years for companies using EBS 2008.

Cloud computing seems to be the trend of the future, and while Microsoft acknowledges that through other products addressing those business demands, they believe the EBS 2008 suite is redundant and doesn't differentiate that much from other Microsoft products like Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft System Center and the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite, as mentioned above.
