How much firms spend on advertising as a percentage of sales varies a lot from firm to firm and industry to industry. Food products tend to be advertised heavily, while cars tend to be advertised much less. In this example however, the difference might be explained by the fact that cars are sold by knowledgeable salesmen, so there is less need for firms producing cars to educate customers prior to them entering the point of sale.
