Feeder Cattle

Feeder Cattle Meaning:
In commodity market terminology, Feeder Cattle refers to cattle weighing between 700 and 850 lbs and which are mature enough to be separated and fattened in a feedlot before being slaughtered. Feeder Cattle usually come from a grazing program and are sometimes referred to as “yearlings.”

Futures on Feeder Cattle are traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange by open outcry and on the CME electronic Globex platform. The contract is for 50,000 pounds or 23 metric tons, steer weights are between 650 to 849 pounds each. Trading hours are between 9:05 AM and 1:00 PM CST and the minimum fluctuation is $12.50 a contract.
