AutoNation (NYSE:AN) traces its beginnings to 1996 when H. Wayne Huizenga invested in a waste management company which would ultimately become Republic Industries, according to their company Web site.
As Republic Industry, they went on a buying spree which resulted in 321 franchise under the company umbrella, before the ended up changing their name in 1999 to Autonation, Inc.
The automotive retailer today operates about 302 vehicle franchises, along with 232 stores located in larger markets; primarily in the southern part of the United States.
In addition to its vehicle sales, the company offers a variety of automotive services, parts, financing and insurance. Services include all types of maintenance on vehicles.
They do this through three major business lines: Domestic, Import, and Premium Luxury.
Acquistions have focused mostly on automotive retail franchises like John Roberts BMW, MINI, Leesburg Honda, Leesburg Toyota and Glauser Mercedes-Benz.
AutoNation headquarters is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
